National Science Week 2008
Saturday 16 - Sunday 24 August
School Theme: Planet Earth - Planet of Change
The aim of National Science Week is to raise the profile and increase public awareness of science, technology and innovation in our society. ASTA encourages school participation in National Science Week. The ASTA Council has chosen this theme in recognition of the 2008 International Year of Planet Earth.
ASTA is currently preparing the 2008 National Science Week Resource Book Planet Earth - Planet of Change and the 2008 Schools Kit. The Kit will be distributed in May 2008 to all schools across Australia including preschools, primary schools, secondary schools and selected TAFEs that offer high school certificate programs
National Science Week ASTA/STAWA Grants for Schools
16-24 August 2008
National Science Week is a chance to focus on the science, technology, engineering and innovation in our daily lives. Each year, the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) provides funding to the Science Teachers Association of WA (STAWA) for a limited number of grants to help WA schools celebrate science.
What is a National Science Week school grant?
A total of $7,500 is available through STAWA to all teachers in WA in the form of grants valued between $100 and $500 to complement school-based science activities for students in schools during National Science Week 16 – 24 August 2008.
What kind of activities will be funded?
Examples of previously funded activities include; multi-school science festivals, invite-a-scientist, integrated curriculum programs, community science and astronomy nights, science fairs, lunch-time rotational activities. Due to the limited availability of funding, the cost of transport, food, routine science incursions and excursions (such as to museums/science centres), capital equipment and teacher relief time are unable to be funded. The grants selection committee will look more favourably on activities that benefit the whole school rather than just one class or year group.
