Socially Responsible Science

Values education has been recognised as an essential part of effective schooling in Australia (Department of Education, Science and Training, 2005).

Traditionally science has often been taught value-free (Allchin, 1998, 2001) because of a belief that values are outside the domain of science education. This view is rapidly being displaced as a growing awareness of global environmental crises, points to the pivotal role of science education for dealing with values learning issues.

The Socially Responsible Science web site: www.dilemmas.net.au provides teaching resources for engaging science students in inquiry learning about ethical dilemmas associated with scientific practices in society.

Hosted by the Science Teachers’ Association of Western Australia, www.dilemmas.net.au was initially funded by the Commonwealth Government's Australian School Innovation in Science, Mathematics & Technology (ASISTM) Project: http://www.asistm.edu.au/asistm/.
