Grants For Schools - Apply Now! - National Science Week 14-22 August 2010
Posted on 11-03-2010 at 3:19 am
National Science Week provides a chance to focus on the impact science, engineering, technology and mathematics has on our lives, our economy, our society and our world.
To help Australian schools celebrate National Science Week, the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) through the Science Teachers Association of WA (STAWA) provides funding for school-initiated National Science Week projects in NSW schools.
What is a National Science Week school grant?
A total of $8 000 is made available to all schools in WA in the form of small grants to enable schools to conduct science activities/events during National Science Week 14-22 August 2010.
In 2010, schools can apply for two types of grants:
A. Seed grants of $1000. A limited number of seed grants are available for schools that wish to conduct a National Science Week activity/event for their school, with significant community involvement. Applicants must seek community partnerships with local councils, industry and business, community organisations, environmental groups, local universities/TAFEs and/or other schools to be considered for a seed grant. Further funding or in-kind contributions from such organizations is required.
B. School grants up to $500. Grants up to $500 are available to schools to complement school-based science activities for students and their parents during National Science Week.
Examples of previously funded activities include multi-school science festivals, invite- a-scientist, integrated curriculum programs, community/family science evenings, science fairs and lunch-time rotational activities. Please note: Funding offered to an applicant may not be the same as the amount requested. Due to the limited availability of funding, the cost of transport, food, routine science incursions and excursions (such as to museums/ science centres) and capital equipment are unable to be funded.
Download the PDF for details of the criteria for each grant type.
Grant selection process
A grant selection committee comprising members of STAWA Council will consider all applications. An application must meet all four criteria in either A or B above. Each application will be assessed on its merits relative to other applications.

STAWA Comment on the Draft Australian Curriculum: Science
Posted on 04-03-2010 at 1:11 am
STAWA Comment on the Australian Curriculum: ScienceThe Science Teachers' Association of Western Australia recognises the potential
benefits of the implementation of a National Curriculum for Science. It supports the
stated aims of the science curriculum and sees its introduction as a way of
enhancing the science education of students across Australia, including WA.
STAWA acknowledges that science teachers and their professional associations have
been involved in the development of the curriculum up to this point and looks
forward to continuing to provide high quality feedback to ACARA. To this end STAWA
will be consulting its members over the following weeks with a view to collating a
response to the draft science curriculum. We encourage science teachers from around
the State to be involved in this consultation process, as well as responding as
individuals on the ACARA consultation portal.
In the longer term it is also hoped that the implementation of the Australian
Curriculum: Science is supported in both primary and secondary schools by sufficient
resources, and professional development for teachers to ensure that students in
Western Australia are able to gain maximum benefit from the introduction of the new
curriculum.
